We recently hosted an exhilarating under-19 basketball tournament in partnership with the non-profit organization “Let it Fly.” Founded by Kyle Umemba , who has been running these tournaments in his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts for the past nine years, the event marked a significant milestone as it branched out internationally, with stops in South Africa and now the UK.
The primary aim of “Let it Fly” is to organize a one-day basketball tournament where all proceeds go towards scholarships for local students, using the game of basketball as a vehicle for positive change. The event in London was particularly special, selling out weeks in advance and creating a buzz that was palpable among participants and spectators alike.
Our own Regal Basketball team participated, gaining invaluable experience on the big stage despite not clinching the tournament victory. The exposure has sparked a newfound determination among our players to excel further in their basketball journeys.
The tournament featured eight teams in a knockout format, culminating in one team emerging victorious. They will have the chance to defend their title next year, as Kyle promises an even bigger and better event. He expressed his excitement, saying, “Next year, we will return even bigger and better as we continue the tradition in London and grow with the beautiful British basketball scene.”
We can’t wait to continue this journey, inspiring our community and providing new opportunities for our aspiring young athletes. Let’s make next year even more memorable!
